Ad Agencies Take Home Awards Haul

Local ad professionals recognized the best of the industry’s 2013work with gold, silver and bronze American Advertising Awards—also known as Addys—at a Thursday event at the Irvine Marriott put on by the Orange County chapter of the American Advertising Federation.

InnoceanUSA in Huntington Beach was the big winner for the evening. Fountain Valley-based Hyundai Motor America Inc.’s dedicated advertising agency took home the best in show award, along with 31 gold awards—20 for “The Walking Dead Chop Shop” campaign. It gave the show’s fans the opportunity to outfit their own zombie survival machine—a Hyundai Elantra—through an interactive app and an accompanying website.

“It feels great to be recognized by our peers,” said Greg Braun, the agency’s executive creative director. “There was a lot of great work tonight. It’s nice to see that Orange County’s advertising and creative community is vibrant. Innocean is gaining a lot of momentum. We have attracted a lot of new talent. We have very strong leadership, and in the last couple of years we have achieved a lot of things that are milestones for us, and we intend to maintain that momentum. Something like tonight is a nice validation and a nice reward for so many on our team that work so hard.

“Our success with “The Walking Dead” came out of being authentic, true to the fans, true to the show and providing content on behalf of Hyundai that fans actually wanted to see. We had a client that was bold enough and visionary enough to embrace an idea like that, and what started as product placement blossomed into television and print and events and social, and digital and collateral and essentially all mediums.”

What Innocean won in gold, DGWB Advertising & Communications in Santa Ana took in silver, along with six gold Addys.

“There is a lot of great competition out there, and we are very pleased with this success, especially in the digital advertising arena and with longtime clients, such Toshiba and Weinerschnitzel,” said Jon Gothold, the agency’s co-owner and executive creative director. “There is a lot of enthusiasm within these walls as we service a very wide range of clients.”

Agency Ingram Micro, the latest spinoff by technology distribution giant Ingram Micro Inc. in Santa Ana, won six silver Addys and four bronze. It was its first time competing as a stand-alone marketing shop.

Other winners included: Fuse Interactive in Laguna Beach; Sparkhouse in Costa Mesa; Wunderman, Ink, Alcone Marketing Group and DdraftfcbLA, all in Irvine; O’Leary and Partners, Orange Label Art +Advertising and Skiver Advertising, all in Newport Beach.

Not all winners had the ad agency designation—Chapman University won a silver Addy for a print ad about autism, and Goodwill of Orange County picked up two silver Addys for its radio spot featuring the Aquabats.
